Rustoleum 223081 Review by P. Fowler (Sellersburg, IN USA)

After applying the magnetic primer according to directions, it had a definite texture to it because of the metal additives. I gave up on it, sanded, primed over it, and then applied 2 coats of chalkboard paint. Finally! A great looking chalkboard...and it's still magnetic. My advice to anyone who wants to use this stuff; Prime your surface before hand with at least 1 coat of good base primer. (I know the magnetic paint is a primer), but prime anyway. Zinzer 1-2-3 is fantastic. Sand between each of the 3 coats of magnetic primer. Then follow over with 2 coats of chalkboard paint. The instructions do not say to sand in between coats. That's what they should say. I was painting the side of my refrigerator wood cabinet panel. It looked and felt smooth, but wasn't. Had I primed beforehand, and sanded the magnetic primer, I would have saved many steps and a lot of grief. All in all, you can't beat Rustoleum products. I have used everything with great success prior to the magnetic primer. It will work, but you have to sand in between the 3 coats. I am, and always will be a Rustoleum #1 fan...

Rustoleum 223081 Review by giggitygiggity

Okay so I knew from the get-go that my use for this paint was not typical so I wasn't expecting any miracles.
I'm a professional artist (illustration, painting, etc) and I like my drafing table to be pretty vertical when I work, sort of like an easel. But I still wanted to be able to move things around like you do on a horizontal table. So I thought I could try magnets.

I tried applying a full canister's worth of this stuff on my table -like 5-6 coatings- and it still wasn't strong enough. But I really wanted this to work so I got a 2nd canister and used it all up as well, for a total of 10-12 coatings. Keep in mind, I needed something much stronger than average.
Now my table surface (30"x60" (pretty huge)) is strong enough for the magnets to hold everything: canvases, sketchbooks, even pencil cases. I use the super-strong rare-earth magnets I got for cheap from dealextreme. Normal fridge magnets definitely wouldn't be strong enough to hold objects. For paper they are fine though.

With a large paint roller (standard size) each coat took about 5 minutes to apply and 30 minutes to dry so it's not too labour intensive but it does take a bit of time. I'm really glad I did it.

I'm giving it 4/5 because I wish it would have been stronger somehow (more metal particles?) and require less coatings. But I understand it's probably a compromise between strength and texture and adherence, maybe a stronger paint would have had too rough a finish. It's kind of rough already but the super-cheap paint roller I used might be to blame, I couldn't really say of much of the roughness is due to the paint.

It's a primer so you're supposed to paint over it which I guess would smooth out the surface. I didn't because I'm afraid it will lose strength, which is my priority and I don't really mind the roughness. I might end up trying the white board paint at some point though.

Basically I'm satisfied!

Rustoleum 223081 Review by Shannon

I followed all the direction on the box. Including size of the area, using light coats with a foam brush, etc. However, After 5 coats, I barely got a magnet to stick. I wanted to hang my kids' art work-but no luck.
